Energy self-sufficiency by 2040
Hydropower has been crucial for the development of electricity in Peru, backing up an enormous rise in access to electricity in the past three decades by being it’s largest renewably exploited resource by far. Hydropower currently supplies Peru with around a quarter of its electricity needs, even though its full potential is far from tapped. Hydropower potential in Peru is estimated to be around 70 000 MW. Peru aims to become energy self-sufficient by 2040, for which hydropower will therefore be essential to increase the share and usage of renewable energy resources.
